The Tomato Nation Fall Classic: The 7K Stretch
We still have $7,943 dollars to raise for college scholarships and Little League uniforms. It sounds like a lot; as a single number, it is a lot.
Broken down, it isn’t a lot at all. Check it out: as of this writing, 823 of you have expressed an opinion about Now & Laters vs. maple candy.
If each of the 823 of you expressed an opinion about the Jackie Robinson Foundation in $10-bill form, we could finish the Fall Classic today. It’s just $10, $10 you might have planned to spend on a candy Keckler and I reminded you that you love — and I endorse that plan wholeheartedly. Snacking is important.
It’s also important for students in under-served communities to know that they have options, and the Jackie Robinson Foundation provides those options — not just college-scholarship money, but also networking opportunities, life-skills classes, money for graduate study, rewards for serving the community, and more.
Skip two lattes. Fill up with regular unleaded instead of premium. Bring your lunch, or smuggle snacks into a movie instead of buying them there. Take change to the bank. Pledge a buck for each Buster Posey RBI. If each of you who voted, and a few of you who didn’t, does one little save-y thing, skips one daily luxury, goes through the couch in the breakroom or sells one pendant on Etsy, and donates today, $5, $10, $20 if you hit your Pick 3 — just a little bit from each of you and we’re finished.
And a couple of years, you can go to the Jackie Robinson Museum that you will have helped to finish, and when you get to the area where the museum honors its supporters, you’ll see: yourselves. A brick, or plaque, or gold-leaf-lettered item in a list that says “the readers of Tomato Nation.com” on it. Hell, I’ll stand out front with a plaque if the JRF doesn’t give us one. Just let me know when you’re going and I’ll meet you.
A few bucks each. Let’s do it. Donate today and you could win an iTunes gift card!

Either paypal is being weird periodically or the donate link isn’t quite right – I was all confused about how to donate til I went to the previous update and clicked the link there.
It’s working okay as far as I can tell, but I’ve updated the HTML just in case.
…Scratch that, now it’s giving me a weird message re: decryption. Just go to the site and use the email address as outlined above, or you can use one of the buttons on a previous entry.
Done!
As I type this, I’m wearing the lovely Pitch In For Baseball cap that arrived from Sars today. I’m waiting until after tonight’s Giants game to pony up the $25 I owe for yesterday’s win, in hopes that I can combine it with another $25 for tonight’s game. (I already coughed up $50 for their two prior wins.) Yes, I’m that Grace.
So to the rest of the Nation, get your contributions in, so that we can polish off this challenge!
Go Giants!
If we donate through Paypal, should we forward you our receipts like with Donors Choose? Or since you’re getting the payment directly, it doesn’t matter?
PayPal forwards me a notification, but if you’d like to make sure it’s getting to me, you can forward your receipts as well. Up to you.
I got my PIFB hat yesterday too! Pretty sure that’s what cinched it for the Phillies.
Just dropped in my $94 for the first five games of the Yankees/Rangers series. Let’s see if Hughes and Lewis can make the lineups add to the total. And man, some more errors in the series would really help the museum, guys!
I kicked in my $20 for the ALCS and the first 5 games of the NLCS. If the Giants win the NLCS, there’ll be some more money coming….
