WHAT ABOUT PROM, NATION?!

Well, I’ll tell you what about it: it’s time for the Tomato Nation/Donors Choose spring contest once again. The (disco) ball drops on our yearly spree o’ generosity on Monday, May 13 at 9 AM ET.

This year, we’ll focus on projects that need less than $100 to get funded. Which, of course, means that we…go all the way with them. We’ll also have one or two gigundo projects that we can really feel proud of finishing off: pianos, field trips to space, that sort of thing.

What’s next? Glad you asked!

1. PRIZING. I need prizes. Gift cards and the like especially helpful, for simplicity’s sake; if you’d like to contribute a prize, email me at bunting at tomatonation dot com.

2. MATCHING FUNDS. Interested in doing a match, either for one day, or with a theme, or for a particular region? Email me!

3. PROJECTS. You may also email me project ideas to add to the TN Prom Giving Page. Three (3) per person limit, please, with these guidelines: a) high-poverty designations only (schools affected by Hurricane Sandy, Boston bombings, e.g. exempt); b) correctly spelled project titles only; c) less than $100 to go OR a huge honker of, say, $10,000; d) related in some way to prom or graduation (grad nights, music/dance, reproductive health, social concerns like anti-bullying, advanced biology…if you can find a way to make an iPad for spectrum kids about the prom somehow, I’ll hear you out).

Stay tuned for the TN Prom FAQ, a special hashtag, and myriad horrible puns about Pretty In Pink. Questions, ask ’em in the comments. (Yes, I will go steady with you. And you.)

  • Veronica B. says:

PLEASE tell me this means you’re escorting some lucky young gentleman to Prom in your tomato costume as the prize.

  • Allie says:

Can we have our own celebratory prom when we hit the goal?

  • Maria says:

That Prom Queen tomato is both horrifying and the most beautiful thing I’ve seen on the internet today. She needs a name but I’m not awake enough to think of one!

  • Cora says:

Prom Queen Tomato name? Why, Cherryandy, of course.

  • Rachel says:

SARAH. If we meet our goal(s), will you, pretty [in pink] please re-create that horrible mess of a prom dress but in tomato-costume size and wear it around for a day? I will follow you around and sing “If You Leave” the whole time. We’ll get a Blaine, too!

I mean, seriously. There was nothing wrong with Iona’s dress and the one Andie’s dad bought her was a little bit cheap-looking but it was still better than the one she “made.” Darts, Andie. Look into them. Or a belt. Gah.

  • Debineezer says:

I stole your DC contest idea for our recent volunteer week and focused on small projects. From less than 80 people, we finished up 12 projects!

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

Rachel, don’t you know shapeless Pepto Bismol sacks are the latest for spring?

Dibs on Blaine. He’s got that hotness only sociopaths can produce.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Jen, I think you’re thinking of Stef. And his linen suits. SUITS!

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

    You are correct, ma’am. Suits.

  • Jen H says:

    Mid-80’s Spader FTW, y’all! *sigh*

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

Those linen suits will be hard to get unwrinkled after lying beside my bed all WEEK.

  • Meredith says:

    Hello!

I wanted to send a huge thank you to you and your wonderful Tomato Nation page. Yesterday my Donor’s Choose project was added to your giving page and today a wonderful person funded the last $80. I work in a high poverty school and my students parents are unable to donate. I held yard sales and sold things from inside my house on ebay to get money to put towards this project. The last few dollars were the hardest to earn. I am thankful for your support because it helped my project be seen by a generous giver.

A colleague of mine has a Donors Choose project that will expire in 3 days. This is his first project and he has gone through many outlets to promote it. He is still $178 away. If you have a free space available, could you please add his link to your giving page? Maybe lightening will strike twice and we can receive donations to fund his request.

Thank you again for all that you do,

    Meredith S.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Meredith: Congrats! So glad we could get your back.

Send me a link to bunting at tomatonation dot com and I’ll have a look at the project.
