Anni-Vine-sary
“Hap-py anniversary! Hap-py ann-i-versary to you!” (That will get stuck in your head now. Sorry.) (Sort of.)
I realized yesterday that The Vine is ten years old. It appeared for the first time on April 20, 2000 — and if Jane Lane is out there anywhere, I’d love to know what she ended up majoring in. …Ten years. Dang.
Let’s celebrate! I’ll clear the entire Ask The Readers backlog between now and the end of the month, and one randomly-selected commenter per day can win a prize: choose between Garner’s Modern American Usage, the 17th (!) edition of Emily Post, or Getting To Yes.
If you’ve got a mystery book, home-repair problem, or discontinued sock, send an email to bunting at tomatonation dot com; if you’ve got an answer, let’s hear it. And thanks for your many contributions over the last decade (…!!).

Where was that Vine in which The Other Woman protested that she was a “good friend of the family”, despite sleeping with the husband, and was peeved that she hadn’t been invited to the BABY SHOWER for the cuckolded (?) wife? That’s a karmic overdraft if I’ve ever seen one, right there.
Happy Anni-vine-sary! Ten years of ass-kicking goodness, hopefully it’s just the beginning.
Can Jack and his friends be permalinked to make a Vine Hall of Fame/Shame?
We need that T-shirt, so TN readers everywhere can recognize one another instantly, in any situation. Just note who starts laughing uncontrollably upon sighting “A MERE BAGATELLE!” and you’ll immediately know who else has met Jack.
Four words: “Have met/was bitch”
Happy birthday!
I wonder how long I’ve read TN, it must be years. I even seem to remember Jack from when he appeared, but I might have read it in the archives. But I do know that I’ve read for many years. I found my way here via a quote: “What would Sars do” in a comment on my favourite (English) blog and got hooked. It’s really fascinating to read the questions and comments, some things are quite universal and some are extremely American to me (a Swede living in Finland for most of her life). The Internet is a fantastic thing:-)
One thing I really appreciate is that most people commenting seem to be able to do it coherently and politely, even if they disagree (but maybe Sars weeds out the worst?) Thank you! It makes reading the comments a joy. (I never read comments on YouTube anymore, for example.)
And yes, the Snark of Sars is wonderful, but there are other things too that makes me come back, like the compassion and understanding. I’d really really like to know how Ben’s Shadow is doing these days: https://tomatonation.com/vine/the-vine-september-28-2001/
The letter is really heartbreaking, and the answer is very good.
I actually just wanted to say how much I like TN and The Vine. Thank you:-)
@Cat: Thanks! And…Ben’s Shadow, man. I stared at that letter for about 45 minutes, thinking, “I am not qualified for this. Nobody is qualified for this.”
