Hi Sars,
I met a guy through an online dating site, and we emailed once or twice a week for a few weeks. Two weeks ago, we decided to meet in person and see if we click. He’s pretty busy, so the first weekend was out. I called him on Tuesday, and we decided that Sunday afternoon would work, and I would call him when I got home from church.
When I left church on Sunday I turned on my phone to find a text message along the lines of, “Sorry! Can’t do today :( Next weekend? I’ll call you this week.”
My main question is, am I overreacting to think that he’s probably not that interested and it’s not worth an awkward first date to figure it out? I feel like he could have at least left a voicemail or checked in later, but should a text message cover it since we met online?
Thanks,
Not Sure I Want To Reschedule
Dear I’m Not Either,
The text isn’t really the problem here, in my opinion — it’s that he’s so busy that it took the better part of two weeks to schedule a meet-up in the first place, and then he flaked on it. Yeah, maybe he’s into you, but emailing a couple of times a week wouldn’t seem to indicate that. And it wouldn’t seem to indicate that you’re that into him, either.
And even if you are into each other, his schedule apparently doesn’t permit him to invest much free time in a relationship, which is going to end up bumming you out. The text itself is kind of cheesy, and suggests that he didn’t want to confront you with the fact that he couldn’t make it, but the more important message here is that he’s probably too busy for you, which is not shit you need. Find a guy who can devote a little more attention to you. Like, any.
