Hiya Sars,
I’ve got a question for the multitudes!
Back in the early ’90s I rented a movie that I really enjoyed.Of course, nearly 15 years since, the title has been lost in the ether.Aside from a vague recollection of the plot and a warm fuzzy feeling, I can remember nothing else.I believe it was a foreign or independent film (perhaps both — no subtitles though) and the storyline is as follows…
A diverse bunch of older women go on a field trip of sorts. For some reason they are taking this trip on a school bus — which breaks down in the middle of nowhere (I remember a meadow). The rest of the movie is these women bonding and learning about one another. They worry over the bus a bit, which I believe ends up re-starting after some tinkering by the driver. But that’s about the size of it.
It was a quiet little movie — no aliens, serial killers or explosions — just people hanging out.No big stars either.I’ve since tried to find it again by Googling “school bus and old ladies,” and so forth.I can’t imagine why that wasn’t successful.
Anyone out there recognize this from my woefully inadequate description? Thanks in advance for the attempts!
Sign me,
No, not the one from Pasadena!
Dear Little Old Lady,
It’s not anything I remember seeing, but that doesn’t mean the readers won’t know the movie you mean.Readers?

It sounds a bit like Bhaji on the Beach, if the foreignness could equal British Indian women going to the seashore in the U.K. The women weren’t all older, though, so I don’t know. (Bhaji on the Beach came out in 1993 and was directed by Gurinder Chadha, who of course also directed Bend It Like Beckham and Bride & Prejudice.)

The movie you’re looking for may be ‘Strangers in Good Company’. I remember it from the 90’s; thanks for reminding me of a good one I’d forgotten about!
“Strangers in Good Company,” made in 1991. The blurb on Amazon looks similar to your description. :)
I think the film she’s thinking of is “Strangers in Good Company.”
Here’s the imdb listing: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102993/
I remember seeing in years ago and really enjoying it.
This is “Strangers in Good Company,” by Canadian director Cynthia Scott. It’s lovely.
I’d say I think it may be “Strangers in Good Company” but that would be redundant.
Perhaps you are thinking of “Golden Girls: The Reunion” or was that just wishful thinking?
:-)
Definitely “Strangers In Good Company” – happens to be my mom’s very favorite, watched it till the tape wore out, movie.
heh. i know this isn’t the movie, but the description reminded me of how hard i laughed at “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.”
You’ve obviously gotten the answer you’re looking for, but here I am at a yarn store and the ladies next to me suddenly start using words like “eight ladies” and “bus trip” and there you have it. How very serendipitous. (Kinda creepy.)
Sounds like “She’ll Be Wearing Pink Pyjamas” starring Julie Walters.
A gaggle of OAP’s on a bus trip in the English Lake District. Possibly involving some kind of survival challenge.
From what I remember, mildly funny, a bit weepy towards the end.
I’ve never heard of that movie, but I must rent it for my mom. She has it in her head that when she and her friends are elderly, they are all going to live together and my cousin and I are going to take turns driving them to outlet malls in a school bus.
I immediately thought she was talking about “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” but it must be the one everybody else says.
Sounds to me like either Bhaji on the beach or She’ll be wearing Pink Pyjamas. If they were asian women then it’ll be Bhaji on the Beach.
Anyway, both are cracking films.
Strangers in Good Company sounds likely, but I feel like, before I read the comments, I could definitely remember this movie and distinctly remembered it being British. FWIW.
