The Vine: May 4, 2007
Hi Sars! I was hoping you and your readers could help me find a movie I used to watch as a kid. It was an animated version of Romeo and Juliet…with robots. Yeah. Juliet commits suicide by removing her power source, but Romeo saves her and they live happily ever after, blah blah blah futurecakes. It was on my local public access chanel here in Aurora, Colorado and everyone I ask about it looks at me like I just told them I saw Elvis at the gas station. Please help!
Signed,
Who would have thought Shakespearean robots could be cool
Dear Not I, Certainly,
I have never heard of such a thing, but I’m sure the readers can help you out. Readers?

“Romie-O and Julie-8”?
Okay, I actually know this one. It is Runaway Robots! Romie-0 and Julie-8. It was made in 1978 (according to imdb), and it was a musical. The owners of the robots are competing with each other trying to sell them at some robot fair (or something) and they fall in love. I remember one of the songs went “Ain’t no robot like Romie-0. Megastellar Company!” and then from the other side “You were made for each other. You and Julie-8!” I loved it when I was little, and I wonder how it would hold up today.
The knower of random knowledge strikes again!
I believe this was called “ROMeo & Juli8.” There seems to be a video game by this name now, but google hasn’t turned up anything else when I search. Writer, I wish you luck — pop back in if you find it, because I loved this movie too!
I never heard of this, but the name others provided made it easy to find a clip on YouTube.
This may not help, but there’s an anime that’s coming out right now, with much the same premise–a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, except that Juliet’s a caped superhero who’s trying to stop the spread of crime in Verona. Other Shakespearean characters make appearences, too.
Based on the above comments, it looks like you mean this:

Ah, weird Canadian-produced children’s television… Wikipedia and IMDb have small entries on this:

This isn’t quite helpful, as it’s DEFINITELY not what the poster is asking for, but there’s a new anime series coming out from Japan called “Romeo x Juliet” in which Juliet is a deposed heir to the kingdom of Neo Verona who cross-dresses as a vigilante called “The Red Whirlwind” to help her people. It’s badass.

A clip of one of the songs on YouTube! I loved this as a kid and am thrilled to have been reminded of it.
I agree with you Princess Hoodie — Canadian-produced children’s television is nearly always off-the-wall.
Yup, what everyone says. I actually have this animation — it was released as part of a video collection called “Nelvanimation” long ago. (Note: VHS only, never on DVD). Nelvanimation came in two volumes, and I can’t remember which volume this was on. You can still find it on eBay now and then, but it is no longer published. My favourite in the collection was “Cosmic Christmas”, where the three magi are aliens who follow a star to earth. Another classic there was “The Devil and Daniel Mouse”.
Looks like you’ve got it, but another thing that this reminded me of: there was a “Romeo and Juliet w/ robots” epsiode in Astroboy. I think the two lovesick androids ended up melded together as a statue with a single beating heart, at the end. (awwww!)
