In case any of the people who helped with advice for our U.S. road trip are interested, here are links to photos of our trip:
Short version (also works for non-Facebook members)
We had a fab time! In the end, we took your readers’ advice and drove all the way along US 101. We ended up going south to north and stopped in Seattle (rather than going all the way to Vancouver; Canada will have to wait). The Yosemite trip was with a tour company. We were constrained by the schedule of my conference, but if anyone is looking to make a similar trip, I would recommend taking one or two days longer for each portion (San Diego to San Francisco / San Francisco to Seattle). I’m happy to share more experiences if anyone has any questions.
Thanks again to everyone for your recommendations and advice!
Regards,
Eva

Sars,
I’ve been trying desperately to remember the name of a movie or TV show that I hope your readers will know.
The movie (or show) would have been on in the mid-late ’80s, but might have been filmed earlier.
It was some sort of quiz show featuring children. The children had to guess (?) the features of dolls (I think), so the answers were things like “blond hair, blue eyes,” “brown hair, brown eyes.” There was also an element of cheating. One of the characters — perhaps the main character — already knew which answers to give before the quiz began.
I can’t remember anything else about this show but it’s been driving me crazy for years!
Thanks,
Sarah

Eva, your pictures are beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing.
I know this isn’t a movie or TV show, but that sounds exactly like the board game Guess Who.
Eva, I love the pictures! Looks like it was an awesome trip – in fact, this makes me want to travel as well! Hope you’ll have lots more trips like this (and share those photos with us as well, he he).
@IS–I had that exact thought, but I couldn’t remember the name of the damn game.
Wasn’t there a kids show based on that game at one point? Or…maybe I dreamed that…?
Eva, I love your photos — what kind of lens(es) were you using?
@tadpoledrain – thanks! I use the basic 18-55 mm that came with the Nikon D60 and a 55-200 mm Nikkor lens. Nothing very special! On long trips like these I wouldn’t want to cart around loads of equipment.
