Dear Sars,
I have a shopping question for you and your readers (mighty army that they be).I’ve been looking off and on for a few years now for gloves for my husband.Being a particular person, he wants leather gloves for the winter that have a long wrist.
If you’ve ever looked in a department store or the like at men’s gloves, you’ll notice that most have a really short wrist. What we’re looking for is something that goes up a little further so that the glove doesn’t leave a gap between it and the sleeve when he moves his arm.
Even though we live in the UK, we’re happy to buy online from pretty much anywhere. And of course, we don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Maybe we’ll pay an arm and a wrist at this point
Dear Wrist,
I don’t know if this pair is long enough (or if your husband is into the Terminator look); LL Bean, Lands End, and J. Crew didn’t seem to have anything that worked.Your best bet may be to get a regulation pair of leather gloves that has a longer liner in wool or cashmere — or to browse cycle shops, since their protective gear is usually leather and much of it offers the longer wrist.
Readers, any thoughts?

I definitely second the recommendation for motorcycle gloves. You can usually find winter-weight gloves with long cuffs, sometimes they have removeable liners.
I had some luck searching “gauntlets” rather than “gloves”; maybe some of these would work?

Opera gloves for me. There’s a niche.
Try Campmor or other outdoor-wear shops too. As with motorcycle gloves, hiking stuff is constructed with more of an eye to protection, and usually offers more coverage.
Marvellous! Those first gloves are just what he wanted. (and who doesn’t love the Terminator aesthetic?) Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
Heck, I want a pair of those gloves now. ;)
The second online review of those gloves on Overstock make me feel like a big couch lump.
Definitely check motorcycle shops – and look at the summer-weight gloves, unless husband seriously suffers from cold hands – cold-weather motorcycle gloves are built assuming your hands are going to get minimal protection from wind and weather, so they’re probably going to be too warm for most in-car situations. I only wear my insulated MC gloves on the very coldest days, until the day starts to warm up, then I end up pulling them off or switching to un-insulated leather gloves.
Darn you! Now I want those gloves, too. I work outside and wear a uniform and they issue us black leather gloves that are not warm at all :( I could probably get away with those, without them noticing that they are not regulation.
Off to get my credit card……
@Allison: Heh, no kidding, me too! An 83-year-old skiier? Regularly “deflecting the slalom poles”? I’m officially the laziest 28-year-old on the planet.
These folks do nothing but gloves. Their custom gloves are pricey, but they’re more likely to have long-wristed men’s gloves ‘off the rack’:

@ Allison and @Lisa, I esp. loved the part about avoiding falling, “too hard to get up!”
