N Candy AA: The Championship Round

Submitted by on May 2, 2010 – 9:12 PM40 Comments

1 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup vs. 5 Twix.

It’s been a long road. Getting from there to here. It’s been a long time, but Reese’s dominance is finally near. I like Twix a lot, but there has been no stopping the peanut butter-chocolate juggernaut who secrets delicious powers in the sharp ridges of its cupcake-papered sides. Last round, I argued that Twix would take down Kit-Kat because of its comparatively varied flavors and consistencies. However, where RPBC is concerned, that argument is out the window.

Where RPBC is concerned, the Oscar-Felix marriage of peanut butter and chocolate has trumped every other candy it has come up against. If Snickers couldn’t beat the salty-sweet, there is no way Twix will. — Keckler‘s overall correct-guess percentage: 84%

I can make the argument that Twix “should” win — it has more flavors, more subtlety, more things to please more palates — but what’s the point. It had a good run, but it’s going to get stepped on by the Cup. — Bunting’s overall correct-guess percentage: 77%

Haaaaaaaa, Twix with an early lead. (What’s that, you say? “Small sample size”? Let me have this fleeting moment of victory before you squash it with your mediocre chocolate and way-too-sweet peanut butter, thankyoumuch.)

  • katie says:

“Should” means nothing to my heart, that only cries out for peanut-butter and chocolate deliciousness, down with Twix!

  • Rachel says:

Ooh, early days but Twix is SUCKING IT. Suck it, Twix. I like you well enough, 90% of the time I’m hitting up that Reese’s.

    Reese’s FTW.

  • Liz C says:

I so wouldn’t have predicted it, but a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup win is ok by me. (I like the full-size one’s a bit better. The mini versions are a bit too sweet, but are still like crack.)

  • Steph S says:

Championship Round and I just now figured out that thing in the woman’s mouth is a dental mirror… wow. I’m a smart one. I couldn’t figure it out and kept thinking it was some kind of tiny candy spoon…? I’ll go sit in the dunce corner now.

  • Maryanne says:

I like both but I have to say, when it came time to buy candy bars to bribe myself to study with, I bought the big RBC bars.

  • Kathryn says:

*sniff* Please forgive me, Twix. You were my go-to snack in my college freshman year. But now RPBC is my go-to snack for my lunchtime internet-surfing. We’ve both moved on..it’s better this way. We’ll always have the TV room in the dorm lobby.

  • jlc12118 says:

We’ll be over here. Happy. Eating our twix-ie goodness… you all take your RPBC for the masses… Yes, master likes the twix-ie…

did that get too weird? It’s bed time on a Sunday night…

  • Keckler says:

Ah, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups sprinkled with Maldon sea salt crunched between my thumb and fingers. Yeah. That’s the way to do it.

  • Em says:

Twix is my all-time favorite, but damn it if RPBC isn’t making me think twice.

  • jill (tx) says:

@Steph, it’s okay — I kept thinking it was a dropper full of some kind of liquid. Like that makes any sense!

Reese’s may win the N Candy AA, but Twix will always win my heart.

  • Peter L. says:

Peanut Butter Cups are like the Juggernaut of Candy Armageddon. That is all.

  • Georgia says:

Steph, there was a while where I didn’t look closely at the picture, and assumed the woman was just stuffing her mouth with candy, so . . .

  • Margaret in CO says:

So it comes to this, hm?

I cannot beliEVE Twix is losing! The way the contents of the RPBC crack and crumble is just disgusting. What have they done to peanut butter to make it so … ew.

  • LaSalleUGirl says:

Steph, I saw it as a spoon (full of sugar!) too. It’s not just you.

I love RPBC, but Twix is my go-to candy bar when I’m having a bad afternoon. Or a boring afternoon. Or an afternoon. You get the idea.

  • Margaret in CO says:

Georgia, Steph – the woman is Sars, isn’t she?

  • Tisha_ says:

I knew RPBC would win this thing, from the start. And it has not let me down! GO REESE’S!!!

  • Tarn says:

    TWIIIIIIIIIIIIX!!!! [/George Costanza]

Except mine is more of a mournful underdog rallying cry, rather than a scornful one!

    Twix FTW!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

That’s not me in the picture, no.

  • Kristina says:

This is just wrong. You get two! For the price of one! What is not to love about that? Also peanut butter and chocolate is an unholy mixture first concocted by the devil to torment souls in the third circle of hell.

  • Tisha_ says:

I thought that it was Sars all this time too. lol

  • Keckler says:

Ahem, you also get two Reese’s PBC for the price of one…

  • Annie says:

Aw, now I want some RBPCs! And some Twix too, because I love them both. Why didn’t I buy some at the grocery store yesterday?

  • Is it odd that I only really like the fun size Reese’s and could take or leave the normal sized ones?

  • Holly says:

RPBCs are the only candy I can never, ever resist.

    WIN!

  • Sue says:

I said it at the beginning — that I would leave the Tomato Nation if Reese’s didn’t win. Looks like I get to stay! Woohoo!

Reese’s! Reese’s! Reese’s! (Heading down to the kitchen to grab one now!)

  • Kari says:

Bah. Twix is clearly the superior candy, with its delicious chocolate, smooth caramel, perfectly crispy cookies, and pleasing binary nature. RPBC will do in a pinch, but when there’s Twix to be had, you, my friends, can keep ’em.

  • Elisa says:

I love Reese’s! It’s about the only chocolate I CAN eat since it isn’t as ridiculously sweet as most other stuff.

Although I AM suprised it beat Snickers. Not surprised it’s beating Twix though.

@Margaret: Your Reese’s crack and crumble? Really? Are you sure you’re not getting 80’s era RPBCs, because generally it isn’t supposed to do that…

  • Elsajeni says:

You know, Twix and Snickers are the two candy bars I will look for if I’m hungry (rather than just feeling like “hey, I kinda want some candy”). They’re filling, compared to other candy bars, and that makes them my most common candy purchases. But I voted for Reese’s over both of them, because, filling-ness aside, it is just so good.

  • JennyB says:

@Steph S – I also just figured out the mirror in the woman’s mouth a few days ago. I’ll sit in the dunce corner with you.

I love me some PBC, and never acquired a taste for Twix, so I’m quite content to see PBC’s impressive lead.

  • avis says:

If I do end up in Hell, I can only hope it’s the circle where people are tormented by chocolate and peanut butter. But I still voted for Twix. Candy *and* cookies! Two, two, two snacks in one!

  • Jessamyn says:

I’m not a big candy eater, but these are the two that will undo me every time. I can hardly bring myself to choose between them. I suppose I’ll go for Reese’s, since the peanut butter filling allows me to fool myself into thinking it’s real food.

  • NotFace says:

Boo! Reese’s can suck it. Suck it, Reese’s PBC, and your sugary peanut-buttery, crappy not-quite-chocolate-y brethren too!

  • Elisa says:

BTW – I had no idea what she was putting into her mouth, I never paid attention. I think I vaguely thought it was a spoon or something related to eating.

  • ferretrick says:

Forget the mirror, I’m going back and forth on does her expression say stark terror, or “ooh, my dentist is hot.”

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

I forgot to mention that voting is open until tomorrow midday ET.

  • Daniel says:

Twix or Reese’s? Jesus. Now I know how Sophie felt.

  • Margaret in CO says:

“@Margaret: Your Reese’s crack and crumble? Really? Are you sure you’re not getting 80’s era RPBCs, because generally it isn’t supposed to do that…”
The 80s may be the last time I tried them, honestly.

(Wow, Sars, I really really REALLY thought that was YOU!)

  • autiger23 says:

I love both as well, and Twix is my go-to a lot of the times, but if on offer, I’d always choose a Cup over it. The sugary-ness of the peanut butter is what makes it good- the sugar cuts the peanut butter stickiness which would otherwise make me not like it.

  • Grainger says:

@ferretrick: if her expression is anything to go by, her dentist is in fact Jesus.
