I could use your and your readers’ help finding a book. It’s a YA book, about a girl that loves to dance, but her mother doesn’t approve.

Bits and pieces I remember: The girl dances with sheets, her mom throws them away. There is a boy in her class with cooties, and he (or is it a different boy?) is sent to live with a foster family and he comes back nice, clean and proper. The cover was purple-ish, and the girl has long brown hair.

I’d say it’s set around the 1950s, although that may not be true…but it’s a poor community — one-room schoolhouse, go to school barefoot, and that is all I remember.

Any help you or your readers could give would be greatly appreciated!

Could it be one of Noel Streatfeild’s “Shoes” books?

  • Nanc in Ashland says:

I’ve read all of Noel Streatfeild’s shoes books and I don’t recall anything L’s description. Alas, I have no helpful suggestions other than my usual ask your librarian!

  • Jobiska says:

I’ve read all the Shoes books (which are British, which barefoot-one-room-schoolhouse-doesn’t sound like), most of them numerous times, and I can say with 99.9% confidence that this is not one of them.

Hear the Wind Blow by Patricia Pendergrast. I remember that book well!

  • Lexi says:

Oh my gosh! Yes! Hear the Wind Blow! You are so wonderful! I totally forgot all about Maybelle. Guys, this book is great! Thank you, Katie!
