N Cookie AA: Preliminary Housekeeping

Submitted by on August 20, 2009 – 9:06 AM13 Comments

Greetings, snacklings! Please give Wing Chun a round of applause (or clink your spoons on your bowls) for her excellent co-captaincy of the N Cereal AA.

pacmansugarcookies11It’s already time to do it again.   The N Cookie AA will launch for real next month, but Keckler and I have decided to do things a bit differently this time around, and we’ll need your help.

Our initial listing of cookies stretched into the hundreds — Keebler alone is trying to gaslight us with the staggering number of cookies it produces — and yet somehow, in our first pass at the list, the proud warrior fortune cookie got overlooked until Keckler knocked two brain cells together and remembered it.

We’ll need to make some cuts, in other words, and we’ll need you to make sure we didn’t forget anything.   How it works:

1. I’ll post preliminary polls here on TN so that we can start weeding out some of these categories.   In the past, you’ve voted for a single cheese or ice cream; here, you can vote for as many varieties as you like.   We want a sense of what people actually eat/buy/care about.   (You’re free to vote in a loathed cookie for the pleasure of seeing it get beaten up later; pure motives aren’t necessary here.)

2. When a particular poll goes up, if you don’t see a cookie of that type that you’d like to see included, please post it in the comments.   For example, when I post the Pepperidge Farm prelim poll, if we’d left Lidos off the list, you could suggest those; please do not post about Girl Scout cookies, Lus, or any other brand until their prelim comes up.   We can’t use every suggestion, of course, but your feedback is appreciated.

Questions?   Ask ’em.   PF prelim polls will go up later today.

This has, sadly, brought to mind my favorite former cookies now gone to that discontinued cookie dream in the night–French Vanilla Cremes and Fudge Cremes. Keebler? I shake my fist at you! But there are good cookies left in the universe.

  • Margaret in CO says:

Thanks, Sars, Wing Chun & Keckler! This is fun, and I am stunned by how invested we get!

  • shanna says:

I am seriously excited for this showdown. That is all.

  • Tisha_ says:

I can’t wait for the Keebler round. They all so good!

  • Sue says:

Oh, I loved Keebler Fudge Cremes. In college, I would buy a package or two to see me through finals week. Besides the delicious fudgy goodness, the beauty of the swirly pattern on the cookies was delightful as I let them slowly sink into the milk in my cup.

  • Georgia says:

Yeah, some of my faves, Mystic Mints, are no longer around either. These were basically mint creme-filled Oreos, enrobed in dark chocolate. So good.

  • Judi says:

This is so fun! Thanks guys!

  • Erin says:

I have no expectations here. I already had my heart broken over the NCerealAAs. Besides, one of my all-time favs is no longer made, so phooey!

  • ferretrick says:

    Chocolate covered Oreos FTW!

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Kiernan: If you can post a TinyURLed link to a Capri, I can address that. We’re happy to include “dead” brands — Stella d’Oro is about to go out of business but you’d better believe I kept the Breakfast Treats in there — but I think the Capri is actually just called something else now. Was that the scalloped one, about the size of a silver dollar?

I like PF shortbread; that isn’t really the point. The point is that the store brands have a universality — of course you can always point to an exception (I’d never heard of Mint Brussels either before Keck added them), but hundreds, if not thousands, of you can comment, for good or ill, on red-bag Chips Ahoy. You know who else can comment on my mother’s butterscotch-chip oatmeal cookies with the just-burnt-enough bottoms? Mr. S. Mr. S is an eloquent fellow, but overall, that isn’t fun, plus which I don’t want to be pitting people’s moms/dads/family recipes against each other.

We understand what y’all are saying about the home/Italian bakery category — we really do. We had this discussion and couldn’t really decide what to do, short of making a…whatever the other tourney is in college hoops that isn’t the NCAA, parking all the homemades/rando Brooklyn-bakery cookie-platter shit you can’t really buy at the store in that, and running two brackets. The issue there is that, as much as we love these snackets, this phase is already a significant pain in the dupa logistically.

So! If any of y’all wants to take a look at the brackets from last time, noodle around on that site a little bit, and give us some suggestions, we are happy to hear them. It may actually be easier, and more fulfilling (read: “fattening,” hee), for everyone involved if we do more than one bracket this time, have some bye rounds, etc.

  • Jaybird says:

Shoot. I was just so happy to see so many chocolate or chocolate-related entries, and so bummed to see mint rear its ugly head yet again. Mint anything is like that kid your mom ALWAYS made you invite to your birthday parties, in spite of the fact that he ate paste and wet his pants.

  • Rachel says:

I love that Lido is included even though those bastards at PF discontinued them. No, they are NOT the same thing as Milanos, just rounder. Their cookie-ness is sublime.

Ooh, what about dark chocolate milanos? Can we include those?

  • Erin says:

    Lemon Coolers?
