Product Crush: Mystery Boots

Submitted by on March 3, 2008 – 8:58 PM32 Comments

I first saw these boots on the train; a Gothy sort of girl had on a green pair of them, a mid-calf boot in a light, distressed forest-meets-Kermit color, very thin (almost cord) laces, and a side zip on the instep side. Flat platform soles, looked kind of crepey. I really wanted to ask her where she got them, but she had her nose rather pointedly buried in a Stendhal, so I didn’t.

Then, helping G Force move into her new pad over the weekend, I saw them again; Curly V had a pair on. This pair is knee-high, and brown, but with the same rad lacing, and she says she has them in black, too; that they hold up really well (she’s had the brown pair for two years); that it’s like wearing a slipper; and that she’s never seen them on Zappos — which, sadly, I can second — but she got them in one of those shoe-poriums in the Central Village. 8th Street alone has like twenty-four shoe stores, and I will do the Stations Of The Shoe in search of a Christmas present (and red Puma Clydes in a men’s 13 is like the unicorn of sneakers, people), but I would way rather order them from my desk.

Zappos ain’t got ’em. Piperlime ain’t got ’em. Amazon ain’t got ’em. Help!

Y’all, if you can find me these boots online, I will drizzle blessings upon you like maple syrup on vanilla ice cream. (But with fewer Madonna-movie-ish sexual overtones.) Do these boots sound familiar? Do you have a pair? Can you send me a link, or a photo of yours? Because I love my Campers, but the last brisk walk to the post office shot a hole in Old Lefty and I think it’s time for a change.

(On a related note: wow, no thanks.)

  • Sars says:

    Cute! But, no.

  • kc says:

Those sound like Miz Mooz. I got mine in one of those anonymous shoe shops on Broadway north of Houston three or four years ago, and at the time, the brand was *nowhere* on the internet. http://www.infinityshoes.com has them now – I don’t see the exact ones I have (which fit the description you’ve given – I have brown, but I remember trying them on in that Kermit green), but see if they’ve got something you like.

  • Sars says:

Close — I’ve admired those in the red, in the window of Something Else in Boerum Hill — but not quite.

  • La BellaDonna says:

*Blush* Proving that some like chocolate, some like vanilla, and some like peanut butter fudge ripple, if the boots in your Wow, No Thanks! link were available with a flat heel, I would totally get them. But then, I have a weakness for poulaines.

  • Sars says:

No offense was intended to my elven readership, of course. Hee.

  • KPP says:

Dang, now I want these mystery boots and I haven’t even seen them.

  • Kristin says:

They sound *exactly* like the Timberland Hollace Tall Boots I have been drooling over, except I don’t think they come in green.

  • Sars says:

Similar sort of laces/lacing, yeah, but the laces on the ones I’m talking about are…denser, for lack of a better word. More lacing, closer together. And it’s primarily decorative, because of the side zip.

  • Leigh says:

    @kc

…Damn. I got some orange miz mooz flats at one of those same shops a few years back and they are the best shoes I’ve ever owned, but sadly they’re finally getting too beat to ignore. My bank account did not need to know they are now available online!

No luck on the boots, sorry. Your friend who owned them didn’t have a brand name?

  • Erin says:

When I clicked on the “no thanks” link, so many TN readers had clicked that M. Giant’s book was one of the links to “other items looked at by people who looked at this item”.

It made me chuckle. . .

  • Wendy says:

They’re not Aerosoles, are they? I can’t find a link to the pair I’m thinking of at the moment, but will keep hunting…

  • Sars says:

They aren’t Aerosoles — unfortunately, because those are super-comfy.

  • Yubi Shines says:

Maybe you could get Curly V to take a photo of ’em? Might make it easier to track down. I could use new boots myself.

  • Lazy Susan says:

Have you tried shoes.com? Or shoebuy.com or bootbarn.com? I hope you’ll post an update or a pic when you track them down.

  • M. Giant says:

@Erin – That’s it, I’m buying a pair. Every night will be the Nightmare Before Christmas at my house.

  • Ali says:

I have the urge to put the linked amazon boots on and go around singing the soundtrack from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

  • KPP says:

I don’t the think Women’s Harley Davidson Kate boot are it, but they might be similar. Although, they don’t come in green and you probably would have noted the Harley brand on it if they were it.

  • Nik says:

Probably not the pair you want, but they said “Kermit” to me:

  • Em says:

So…do you mean creepers? Maybe I’m stuck on the flat platform sole, but a gothy sort would definitely wear some.
Here’s a pair of boots with lacing and a side zip.
    http://www.howcool.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=44494

  • Sars says:

Nope, not Creepers — I’d know that milled sole anywhere.

  • Jules says:

Sars – Could they be Borns? I have some Kermit coloured borns – though no laces, so they are not “your” boots, but you might check out their site. FWIW, the first time I tried on a pair of Born boots I was so vocal about how good they felt that I’m sure it sounded almost orgasmic.

  • Curly V says:

Okay, Sars, I spent an inordinant amount of time this afternoon trying to locate those mystery boots for you online. No luck yet but here’s a clue. I can barely read the faded tag on the inside of my brown boots and it says Miss Mooz by Garth. (I think it’s by Garth). I haven’t googled that yet, so try it. I’ll check my black ones at home and see if it says anything different.

Now if you can’t find them online, try slumming on Broadway. The store (if it is still there) is on the left side of the street, either a few blocks above or below Houston, as you are heading downtown. I bought my black ankle high boots probably 5 years ago, and the brown knee-high ones 2 years ago. They usually have them in the window. And the store looks sort of like a David Z type shoe store, with tons of shoes in the window and hungry sales guys. They teased me for buying a second pair, but I love them and wear them all the time. You need to own these boots. Now. I think they cost around $100, more or less. Good luck searching!

  • Sars says:

Curly V! You better not wear a 9 or I will take them off you. Hee. Seriously, though, I fully intend to own a pair by the time I see you next.

And: looks like kc was right.

  • Curly V says:

Hey again, Sars! The black boots at home are so old the label has worn out. And I meant to type Miz Mooz not Miss Mooz. My mistake. I searched again but they just aren’t showing up online. kc was definitely right…..and if she’s a size 9, she better watch out! I’ll be looking at your tootsie next time I see you!

  • Lazy Susan says:

It’s Gazith. Try infinitishoes.com. They also have miz mooz at nordstroms.com and some others, I think. Good luck.

  • sharon says:

    Hi,

I know what boots you are talking about. I have a pair and I am wearing them right now in fact. I’ve been looking for a new pair for over a year now. I don’t see them anywere! I am so afraid that my boots are going to fall apart soon… I don’t ever want to wear another shoe again. If I find them I will let you know – I can send a pic if that helps in your search. I am a size 8.

  • Arlene says:

Wait, so then did you find them? I’m confused. If you’re still searching, maybe try asking here:

    http://www.shoeblog.com/forums/shoe-help/

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Arlene, the search is not really active because it’s April, and soon boot season will be over — but Katie, that’s exactly the pair. Wrong size, but that’s the style, for sure.

So if anyone sees those boots in a 9, you know the email address.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

May God bless you and yours, Nat. Ordering now.
