Saving Private Ryan

Mmm, Barry Pepper. …What? Oh, sorry. I seem to recall critics saying that after the opening sequence, it could have stood a tighter edit, but I didn’t really feel that way; the length felt about right to me, and it’s a wonderful picture to look at. I do, however, think that the framing device with Older James Ryan is annoying. It’s mawkish, which detracts from the effect of the rest of the movie, and the actor playing Ryan as an old man isn’t up to the job, plus it goes on waaaaaay too long, like, yes, all those gravestones, we get it, CUT already. Overall, a good movie and worth seeing, but a little on the self-righteous side.
