The Long Good Friday

It took us a while to get into it and start piecing together what’s going on; the background of the Hoskins character still isn’t clear, at least to me, and the accents gave us some trouble at first. Helen Mirren is on the grating side, but overall, I liked it. It’s a movie that does exactly what it sets out to do, which sounds like a backhanded compliment, but that’s actually quite rare. Look out for very young, but already very hairy (hee), Pierce Brosnan as a bad guy with no lines. (9/2/03)
