Tomato Nation Read-Along #9: Poll

Submitted by on March 25, 2011 – 9:04 AM12 Comments

It’s a pop-culture behind-the-scenes extravaganza in the TNRA poll this time around. Joining Brinda and Grann from last time: JWOWW, Angela Chase, Scott Weiland’s wife, Graydon Carter, and oh yeah the Philadelphia Mob. Klassy!

Can’t wait to see what you pick out. The poll’s open ’til the weekend!

Which book(s) would you read along with? (You can pick as many as 3.)

  • Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV (Jennifer L. Pozner) / pop culture (22%, 138 Votes)
  • Dear Angela: Remembering "My So-Called Life" (ed. Byers and Lavery) / cultural studies (15%, 97 Votes)
  • The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon (David Grann) / history (15%, 94 Votes)
  • Vanity Fair's Tales of Hollywood: Rebels, Reds, and Graduates and the Wild Stories Behind the Making of 13 Iconic Films (ed. Carter) / pop culture (11%, 71 Votes)
  • Murder Machine: A True Story of Madness and the Mafia (Gene Mustain and Jerry Capeci) / true crime (10%, 62 Votes)
  • Badass: A Hard-Earned Guide to Living Life with Style and (the Right) Attitude (Shannen Doherty) / self-help (9%, 59 Votes)
  • Fall to Pieces: A Memoir of Drugs, Rock 'n' Roll, and Mental Illness (Mary Forsberg Weiland with Larkin Warren) / biography (9%, 57 Votes)

Total Voters: 335

I refuse to read anything written by anybody associated with a reality show of any kind, especially since I’ve never seen any proof that they themselves can read, never mind write!

  • Steph says:

I heard Mary Weiland on a podcast a few months ago and she was surprisingly smart and funny. I’ve been meaning to pick up her book. Vote for Fall to Pieces.

  • Joleen says:

LMAO! I thought the picture was of Adam Ant!

  • Faye says:

I really wouldn’t recommend the MSCL one, it’s alternately dully surfac-ey and needlessly heavy theory dense (even for a TV academic like me). Very disappointing.

  • Natalie says:

@Faye: That teaches me to vote before I read comments.

I’ve been wanting to read Reality Bites Back for awhile now. Vote it to success, Nation!

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

I’m for Lost City of Z or Reality Bites Back, since I don’t watch much reality TV–it’s gotten pretty skimmed down, now, since DC Cupcakes is apparently trying to convince me that a bakery that makes cupcakes is a hotbed of missed deadlines and sin.

No. Just, no. It’s a bakery. I have no doubt that the owners work hard and have a fair amount of drama in their lives. It’s the enforced artificialtiy of “dun DUN DUNNNNN! What happens when Ashley RUNS OUT OF BUTTERCREAM FROSTING?! APOCALYPSE!” crap that grates on me. I mean, I imagine she’d make some more damn frosting and complete her task, you know? The sad part is that “a day in the life” shows can be really fascinating when they’re about real life, not this “fight for the cameras” bullshit.

Sorry, I got all prissy there. Anyway, reading! The Mob! Amazon River! Awesome!

  • Kristen says:

Netflix just added “My So Call Life” so you could watch AND read! :)

  • Allie says:

Aww, I thought it was going to be My So-Called Life Goes On, the book that came out after the show where Brian Krakow loses his virginity TO RAYANNE’S MOM.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Welcome, Twitter followers of Ms. Pozner! Looks like we might have a ringer on our hands here. Heh.

But: looks like we might have an author chat opportunity as well. Stay tuned!

  • Thanks for including Reality Bites Back in this poll, Sarah. I first noticed when the book was third in a neck&neck (spine&spine?) Race. A tweet and a Facebook post about the poll, and here we re. Didn’t mean to stack the deck, but psyched about potentially doing a chat — love the smart snark here.

  • Sam Brooks says:

    Shannen Doherty? SOLD.

  • meredithea says:

Yay! I love the mix of books here. I’m way tempted to vote for the Jersey Shore book, but I just. Can’t. Do it! I’ve been meaning to read Pozner’s book to see if I can use it in class, and it’d be fun to chat with her!
