Contest ’09: It’s Coming

Submitted by on September 13, 2009 – 9:50 AM9 Comments

A few things I need before we get started on the ’09 contest:

1. project suggestions

Please send any and all projects for addition to the master list.I can’t promise that I’ll take them all, but I definitely won’t add projects close to expiring, or with spelling or grammatical errors in the title.

2. prizes

This is an excellent use of your Amex points; the program offers hundreds of gift-certificate options. You can also sponsor a mini-prize once the contest is underway.

3. Early Girl’s first intern

The contest has become a behemoth, which I love, but I need an extra pair of hands and eyes. The position pays almost nothing, but swag rolls downhill, and I will write a glowing recommendation upon completion. Candidates should:

  • have working knowledge of social media, the WordPress backend, and Excel (that last one’s key; ain’t no time to train ye), and flawless usage
  • keep relatively late hours
  • live in the metro area (I’ll consider anyone in the Eastern time zone, but occasionally I will need you to appear in person — including in a non-speaking role in this year’s promo video)
  • be comfortable with a fireman-esque “long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror” workflow
  • not have any vacation planned from 9/15-11/15

Sound fun, or at least not horrible?Send me your c.v. pasted into the body of an email.Your cover letter can ask any questions you might have; again, this is not a ton of work each day, but rather more like a few bursts of sloggy logistical set-up, followed by thumb-twiddling.

Email all projects, prize offerings, and resumes to bunting at tomatonation dot com.

Hey, speaking of Donors Choose: people who have a Sonic near them might want to make it their fast-food place of choice for the rest of September, as they’re doing a deal called “Limeades for Learning,” where you get a code with any drink you order, then put in the code on a website where it allows you to vote for a Donors Choose project, and every week the top projects get funded. (And hey, if you go between 2 and 4 p.m. the drinks are half-price.)

Just a reminder: please email these rather than posting them here. Thanks.

Dammit, if I weren’t a swamped college student in Virginia, I would be shoving people out of the way to get that intern spot.

I love Adam Lambert too, but I’m not getting the joke.

I don’t know what it is with guys whose names end in “-ert” thinking they can bite y’all’s shit, but: nope! Beatin’ him!

Sars, have you ever considered a very brief, very basic post to catch people up on what this contest is? Something along the lines of “For new readers: Every year since blahblahyear Tomato Nation participates in/holds/whatever a [time period]-long contest to drum up contributions to Donors Choose, which is an organization that funnels contributions to worthy school projects. During this time span, there are several mini-contests to keep the excitement high and the donations flowing. At the end of it, Sars does something crazy if the overall $ goal is met. Not only are you contributing to a worthy cause, but there is also the fun of beating other bloggers/etc. etc. and Sars would love your help!”

At least, that’s what I gather this is about after a great deal of poking around on links, back in your archives, etc. However, even though I’m a big girl and can research it myself, both last year and this year I kind of felt like the clueless one who’s late to a party to which she’s not sure she’s invited, because everyone’s already all excited and talking about it as if they all know all about how it works. I’d rather feel immediately excited and charitable than clueless and uncertain and not part of the in group that already is in the know.

Just a thought, and certainly not meant to drag down the wonderful work that this obviously does. As a Philly resident, I applaud anything that helps teachers in stressed schools in any location.

  • ferretrick says:

Oh yes, the Nation will so kick his ass…even if some of us are tempted by his signed posters…*whistles*

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Cindy, that’s actually a great idea. I’ll post a primer in the next few days.
