Contest: Six Figures

Submitted by on October 21, 2009 – 9:22 AM19 Comments

Should happen in just a few minutes; $99,815 as I write this. Congratulations and thanks to all of you (and Asirda, who’s an inspirational strategist as well as a generous matcher).

We’ve still got some work to do, though!   Ten days left; 50K ’til goal. No problem, I bet — and don’t forget, HP will cut us in for a larger match the more money we raise by Sunday 25 October.

But enough about you; let’s talk about stuff you can win!   Reader Lindsey N. is stoked about “Motion Detectives,” and if you donate to that project today by midnight, she’s offered four episodes of Modern Marvels to one lucky winner — any four (4) titles from her collection.

OR you can contribute to “Science Fair Project 2009” and win a $25 e-certificate to Home Depot.

Send me your receipts by midnight tonight to win.

Keep sharing the contest with friends, colleagues, enemies, transit seatmates, pets, whatever it takes.   The more we raise by Sunday, the more HP will bet on red.

Six figures should be right about… now.

  • Vanessa says:

@Sarah: So as I do the math, the Tomato Nation is good for at least $70K of the HP money. Can this be counted toward the Tomato-Lady-Takes-Atlantic-City Fund?

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    Aaaaaand 100K.

    [Snoopy dance]

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Vanessa: I’m still trying to get clear on exactly how it will work. The funds will go towards Bet Red pronto, as far as I know; I’ll pass along more info as I get it.

What YOU need to know: the higher our total on Sunday, the bigger a total percentage we qualify for. Every buck counts. Go back through those out-of-season jackets and look for that secret ten dollars you always forget about; buy yourself some gum; huck the rest this-a-way.

  • Vanessa says:

@Sarah: Yes, ma’am, checking my and everyone-at-work’s jacket too.

  • Vanessa H says:

I am officially changing to add my initial. I keep thinking I’m posting when I know I’m not.

I logged on this morning and the total was at exactly $100,000!!! I went to read the comments and came back to the home page a few minutes later to grab a screen shot and it had already increased.

How am I going to get any work done around you all?

  • Academic says:

Hmmmmm…. with the HP infusion of dollars…. if we hit goal of 150K… then we’re probably going to hit goal of 210K for a traveling tomato……..

  • Vanessa R. says:

@Vanessa H.: Sorry for the confusion, hopefully the initials will help :D

  • Nicole says:

Last year, we raised more than 10,000 in a day to get to 100,000 and watching the totals climb that day was the most heartwarming, fun thing ever, and yesterday was equally awesome.
How cool would it be to get to 150,000 before the HP match kicks in? I don’t think its possible, but it would redefine awesome.

  • Sasha says:

    Wow. What’s awesomer than awesome?

  • Sarah says:

I got my mom to donate! And now she’s asking people she works with to donate! Bet Red!

  • Cij says:

I’ve even asked an evil ex to donate…we’ll see if he ponies up!

  • Dsayko says:

I’ve pulled my mother in as well (and hopefully some other family members, with an informative and link-filled email last night). I have a feeling my mother is going to spend hours looking at projects and end up donating more than she planned. I know I always do. As I said in the email to my family, it’s really quite something, this group of people connected by a blog, uniting together to try to help fix education, one project at a time.

  • Cyn says:

If my calculations are correct (and I’m terrible at math), then Tomato Nation is responsible for 40% of the total for the Social Media Challenge. That’s… just incredible. I’m so impressed with you all. Amazing.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    Heh: http://tinyurl.com/ykrxdfc

So: Gawker Media properties together raise 3K in about two weeks, which is great. Tomato Nation readers raised that amount in about two hours yesterday, which is not even the same conversation.

  • Rachel says:

Same conversation? Try totally different language. Gawker is speaking Esperanto and we’ve moved on to Pig-Klingon or something. :-)

  • rlb14 says:

And to look at a different figure. By my count, 330 projects funded. 330!!!! are you kidding me?!?

Sure, it is just over half of the ones in the TN pool, but that is a LOT of classrooms.

There are some big $$ projects still in the pool, go get that HP money!

  • Kristen says:

Plus, we raised 8K in like 1 minute because we have the awesome and mighty Asirda!
