Save The Day: April 5

Submitted by on April 5, 2011 – 9:04 AM17 Comments

7: 30 PM update

$56,750. Damn good first five days, Nation. We’ve got a 1K match coming at 66K — but this is sometimes the hard part. This is sometimes where it feels like a boulder on a steep hill. I know it’s tough.

Let me try to make it fun on this chilly night here in Brooklyn. My alma mater has a pitcher on the hill tonight against the Phils. If he gets the W, I’ll give $10 to a project about tigers, and $10 to a baseball project. If he doesn’t, I’ll throw the $20 at a project in Philadelphia.

Have you got a way to keep the heroism fun? Share it in the comments! And thanks for being awesome.

noon update

Looks like the 25K match is just about done — sweet! $50,616 right now, but that will change momentarily, I’m sure.

And you can change it yourself! Donate to any project on the Superpage between now and midnight ET and you could win a $100 Best Buy gift card! Any project at all — iPods, frogs, field trips, math manipulatives — as long as it’s on the Superpage! No need to forward receipts this time! Exclamation point!

And now, an administrative note: the mystery guest is nigh, and will make all our lives easier and more sortable. In the meantime, I’m not accepting new projects for the Superpage right now. Donate all you like, but please do not send me new project-addition requests until Thursday at the earliest. (And do not post them in the comments.) It’s an organizational thing; thanks so much for your patience.

Now go get it.

9 AM update

You’ve raised $26,213 so far — and at some point soon, that number will jump to north of 50K. Fantastic work, guys! And remember, it’s a dollar-for-dollar match, so if, say, you’ve raised $1000, but you don’t have $1000 worth of projects remaining on your Giving Page? Go add some pronto!

Speaking of Giving-Page rock stars, let’s hear it for the We Are a Part of Tomato Nation page, which added 31 new donors yesterday and will receive $100 from reader Amy R. for their efforts! Also doing a splendid job of bringing in new donors and scoring $50 each: Charmaine’s “You Say To-ma-to, I Say To-mah-to” page (16 new donors); the T-Nation Jeopardy page (13 new donors); and the FIRE! FIRE! page (11 new donors). Great, great work, guys. Thank you so much for your help!

In other news, I have not heard back from a few of you about the mini-prizes you’ve won. Please make sure emails from TN don’t go into your junk folder — thanks!

A little later this morning: a sizable mini-prize; and…our mystery guest? Who can say? (Well, I can. But I won’t.) Better stay tuned! Or just go donate. The top of the Superpage features some pretty cute kids in ASL class throwing the rock horns at the camera — why not them?

$50,000 in 5 days? I love being a member of Tomato Nation and finding my inner super hero. You guys are all kinds of awesome. Sniff. And YAY.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

    $52,826! “Sorry” for the error!

  • Jennifer M. says:

I officially donated to this project on the super page because I support health and wellness education, but the real reason is that the profile picture involves a tomato wearing glasses and cauliflower sheep! Check it out: http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=518355

Thank you so much for supporting Donorschoose.org and the public school classrooms they help! The Tomato Nation giving pages have helped complete two projects from our school. One of the projects had no donors for the six weeks it had been posted on the DC site but got funded within 24 hours of being posted on the Tomato Nation Superpage. Needless to say, we had a very excited P.E. teacher yesterday! I woke up this morning to find our that the DC Action Squadron completed my project through the “We Are a Part of Tomato Nation” page. Amazing! Thanks so much.

Just a pause in the fun activities of our awesomeness to thank you for starting this. Just looked at my whole giving history and realized I have been doing this since ’07, and I’m sure others of the TN have been doing it way longer than that. We’ve helped the kids, helped Donors Choose, and helped ourselves feel like contributing adults–through thick and thin. I’m so thankful to have been a part of this!

You’re awesome. And please post more pics of Master S.

  • Charmaine says:

Awesome doesn’t seem like enough, we may need to think of a new word for it, and a big thanks to the Donorschoose.org Action Squadron!!!
From 50K to beyond!!! Rock on T. Nation!!!

  • Dawn says:

That Action Squadron sure was super-busy this morning! That must be a terrific job to have. I know they made my day ;) Thank you to all of Tomato Nation!

  • anotherkate says:

This has been so great to read about, and I can’t wait until payday so I can make my own contribution. TNers are awesome.

  • Donna says:

Just signed up to become a monthly donor. I hope my $50 gift certificate arrives in time to add it to the contest total!

  • Thanks, Tomato Friends! The last two days have been filled with layoffs and budget cuts. It’s nice to get good news. Thanks for funding “Shiny Happy Teenagers”.

  • Ann D says:

A HUGE THANK YOU to all donors to the FIRE! FIRE!, T-Nation Jeopardy , and Pets4Kids giving pages. YOU MADE MANY TEACHERS INCREDIBLY HAPPY THIS MORNING. Over $4500 was donated to lots of classrooms around the country. DC will be posting another $370 to FIRE FIRE and $441 to JEOPARDY TONIGHT. I ran out of projects! Check it out and see if one of your projects is listed. YOU COULD BE THE WINNER!!! Watch for an update tomorrow..going to change it up to make it interesting.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

Not sure what I mean by making it fun? Well, obviously I mean gambling. Hee. We heard some good ideas for the Fall Classic, right here: https://tomatonation.com/donors-choose-and-contests/the-tomato-nation-fall-classic-stand-up-double/

You don’t have to use sports, either. Padiddles on your way to your in-laws’ house, whether we’ll ever see a 70-degree day in NYC this month…raising this much money is HARD. Whatever you gotta do to stay psyched.

  • Ann D says:

GIVING PAGE UPDATE: For the next 24-48 hours the PETS4KIDS Giving Page will focus on MATH & SCIENCE PROJECTS <$70 to complete. I have tried to get all the MATCHING FUNDS PROJECTS so you can DOUBLE YOUR MONEY! Check it out and come help a Math & Science class. Changing classrooms one at a time across the country. GO TOMATO NATION!

  • Bristlesage says:

Okay. $5 for every time I have to call a taxation agency. $5 for every A’s win, and an extra $25 if they finish over .500 for April. And $1 for every time I expound on the awesomeness of Leslie Knope, which believe me, is gonna add up (I’m counting “yelling at the tv screen” as “expounding”). All totals to be added weekly, except the “over.500” one, of course.

  • FloridaErin says:

I pledge $5 for every strikeout that Verlander can land against Baltimore tomorrow (which is a dangerous freaking pledge to make, I realize). Bonus $5 if the Tigers can actually give him a W!

  • Bess says:

Okay, I’ve been inspired to do a little weekly contest with myself–$1 for every time I answer the phone with my company’s name only to be immediately asked by the caller if they have reached my company. $1 for every time I end up on the Clark bus with the crazy long-haired guy who talks to Jesus and imaginary snakes. And, to keep it happy, $5 for every kid I see at the museum where I eat lunch who runs straight to the dinosaurs screaming with excitement.

Thanks for the inspiration, Tomato Nationals!
