TN Fall Contest: If Raising Money Were Baseball…

Submitted by on October 3, 2007 – 8:46 AM44 Comments

I was sitting here thinking, “Who would the readers be, if fund-raising were baseball? Would they be the A-Rod — MVP, probably the best player ever? …Nah, he’s kind of whiny. The Babe Ruth? He was kind of a mess in some ways. Loved kids, though, that guy, and they loved him, AND he could pitch, too. …No no no. They’re not a player. They’re the diamond.

I’m fine! I just have something in my eyes. In both my eyes. [sneefle] [hahnk]

“Aw, that’s sweet. …About the tomato? Costume?”

I’m on it. Bonus round is open.

(Don’t see your suggestion? Don’t worry, I’m saving them, but I had to prep this one in a hurry last night; if/when we finish this bad boy off, I’ll go back to my file of your emails. Stay tuned for a contest-page update later today.)

Holy crap! Congrats! I don’t even remember what the original deadline was – but I swear, that 50K is going to be raised by Friday.

  • bronte says:

I’m on UK time and I’ve spent the mornign checking. No not up yet.
    Checking. No.
    Come on Sars wake up.
    Checking. No still not up.
    Wake up already
Yay! She’s up. Dancing Tomato challenge is Go!

  • Sars says:

…4%. Bunch of drunken pirates in here with the spending. Love it.

  • Zeep says:

Wow. I’m in awe of the awesome.

  • Sars says:

…Um. 5%. Someone really likes construction paper!

  • RB says:

An un-drunken pirate, here. I spent my monthly booze money on the challenge, so I’m doing good for both schools and my liver.

  • Bronte says:

    $500 in 30 mins!

  • Diana says:

    Make that 10%.

    I love people.

  • A^3 says:

What’s really awesome is that the bonus round is already in 3rd place on the General Blogs leaderboard! Ricedaddies, watch out!

  • Mika says:

    13% — that was fast!

  • Scarlett says:

13%! Nice to see everyone made it to work this morning – ten minutes ago we were still at 5%.

  • Annie says:

…and donated. 14%. The tomato will dance again, or for the first time!

  • Jenn says:

14% already?? Some of us just woke up!

  • I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about a fundraiser before. Thank you, all you happy people!

  • Jaime says:

    27%! Freakin’ awesome, people.

  • baggage says:

    Oh my word. 27% already??

  • Erica says:

We went from 20% to 32% before I even got my email receipt! Holy crap, guys. THIS is the most wonderful time of the year.

  • Mer says:

It’s been an hour, and it’s 32%. Love it.

  • Heather says:

35%. It was 6% when I logged on an hour ago. Insane! And totally awesome.

  • bronte says:

    Yeah.
TN is now #1 and #2 on the General blogs leaderboard

#1 and #11 on the All blogs leaderboard.

    35% = $1800 in 70 mins. Thats scarily awesome

  • Sasha says:

I’m in – thanks for giving us procrastinators a chance to catch up.

  • Jenn says:

39%. At this rate it’ll be done by lunchtime.

  • herschel says:

by the time i was scrolling through the remaining challenges, another one had already been fully funded! MUST! DONATE! FASTER!

  • kona says:

@Jenn: More like brunch time at this rate. It went from 41 to 42% as I was writing this. Awesome.

  • doriette says:

“if/when we finish this bad boy off”?

    Are you fucking kidding me?

You’ve raised $37,232 in the first 58 hours of a 744 hour contest.

I’m not wondering “if,” I’m wondering “how much over” the $45K (plus your $5K, plus Claire Dane’s $5K) we’re going to get by the end of this thing.

You’ll continue to add proposals once that goal’s met, right?

  • Hammi says:

    Holy cow! 42%

  • Sol says:

Damnit – I totally want to fund some ballroom dance lessons for 7th graders IN MY CITY, but I don’t get paid til next week (and I already donated what I could yesterday for a ping pong table)! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRG!
    And yet, yay!

  • WendyD says:

A question re: prizes. If we donate several times, does that make us eligible for several entries in the drawing? Or is it a one entry per person deal? Either way, I picture the cats just lying down on a pile of paper at the end of the day/week/month.

  • monkeyboy says:

You guys rock so much, if I could only track down my wife to tell her that her proposal has been funded! I saw that it had been included, called her, and then checked back to see that it was already fulfilled. Amazing people here, thank you all so much!

    Books for the kiddies!

  • Claire says:

    45%!

We can so finish this one by tonight.

  • Rachel says:

45%! Jerry Lewis can SUCK IT!

  • Ang says:

I can’t believe that between the time I went to bed last night and the time I sat down at my computer this morning with a croissant, the total has jumped from 98% of the Original projects funded to 45% of the BONUS projects funded! That’s less than 10 hours. That blows my mind! :)

Correction: 46% since I started writing. And in 2nd place on the Leaderboard!

  • Sars says:

You can donate as many times as you like, but it’s one entry per person. Sending me more than one receipt doesn’t DQ you or anything, but it doesn’t increase your chances, either. I believe this is explained on the main contest page.

    …47%

  • Annie says:

What’s going to happen when all those people who have to wait until they get paid on Friday get their checks? World peace?

  • Jenn says:

Unbe-freaking-lievable. How am I supposed to get any work done when practically every time I refresh the DC page the percentage goes up???

  • Melanie says:

50%! And “Jerry Lewis can SUCK IT!” is cracking me up.

Honestly, this is so amazing, and I’m glad to be a part of it. Thinking about all these kids and their new encyclopedias and water filters and color copiers and books just makes me really happy.

  • Danielle says:

And we’re up to 51%. 51-freakin’-percent, in a little over 2 hours. Amazing.

Jerry Lewis can suck it, indeed. :o)

  • Katie says:

Do I have to pick a project or can I donate generally? I don’t see a choice for that…

  • Cij says:

Annie, I’m beginning to think that if we put our minds to it, the Awesome Guild of Tomato Nation could certainly pull off World Peace. Or at least make a huge difference in kid’s lives so that they grow up to achieve it! E

I am confident that Sars will come up with more incentives/projects for those who have to wait until Friday to donate. Maybe her cats will wear Tomato Regalia too?

  • Cathy says:

Sars, all I ask is that you keep putting up projects that have to do with books, writing or reading. I’m enlisting publishing friends who have bosses with deeper pockets than I…. we could rebuild the New Orleans Public Library like this, I tell ya.

  • Jackie says:

Holy cow! You people are crazy! It’s not even 8 a.m. on the west coast and the tomato dance challenge is 56% funded. So completely awesome!

  • bronte says:

Is anyone else finding the page backsliding on them? I hit the F5 for refesh button and the page blinks, but instead of updating it goes to the page I had before, so the total drops back a percent or two. I sometimes have to refresh two or three times more to get the updated page/the most recent version I had seen.
We are probably overloading the system with all the reloading of the page.

    …60% Woo!

  • Scarlett says:

Is it dorky that I kind of want Sars to up the amount for this challenge, so that we can be #1 and 2 on the “all blogs” leaderboard?

  • Kendra says:

“Maybe her cats will wear Tomato Regalia too?”

    Little TomaJoe!
