Professor Sunbeam, June 2013

One time, years ago, I started making a list of all the nicknames I had for the Hobe: Orangino. Hobey Wan. Clicks. Herr Mittenspiel. Grampy. Creamsicle. Tolstoy.

I stopped after, like, 37, because it was still only a fraction of the list, because he would keep licking a plastic bag like a big weirdo no matter what I called him, because they all meant the same thing, the thing all nicknames mean, that he was known, that he was loved.

And he is, more than all his names can say.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

@Cora, he was pulling that face at Mabel to this day.

Thanks again, guys. Strangely, I think in JOE’S heaven, they’re together, but in Hobey’s heaven, Joe is nowhere around. Or if he is, he’s made of lemon yogurt.

…I miss those freaks like you wouldn’t believe.

  • Marie says:

Condolences Sars. They go, but they are not forgotten.

  • year of the cat says:

There just aren’t words to express how sorry I am for your loss. I’ve loved reading about your cats over the years, and it’s clear how much you love them.

Your tales of Hobey and Little Joe inspired me to give cat ownership a shot about ten years ago, and I’ve turned into a cat person.

He was known, by more people than he ever knew. (My cat also licks plastic bags like they’re drugged or something. Cats are so weird.) I’m sorry, Sars.

Aww, I’m so sorry. He was a handsome fellow indeed.

  • Sara J. says:

  • Mandi says:

So sorry for your loss, Sars. Thanks so much for sharing so much of his & Little Joe’s life – you’ve made me a better cat cohabitant because of all your stories and advice over the years.

  • Kerry says:

Not to make this about me, I’m so so sorry for you, but I was just thinking on my way home today that it’s almost 4 yrs since my beloved cat Woody died and I was thinking of all the nicknames I had for him. I took my other (20 yr old) cat in to the vet and had a hard discussion about even trying to find out why he’s losing weight because why bother at his age and then came home to see this. I’m going to have some more wine now in honor of big orange cats. Sending good thoughts your way, I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • squandra says:

So sorry for your loss, Sars. Rest in peace, sweet Hobey.

  • Kari says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Sars. They’re such darlings, our lets, and they always leave us too soon.

  • nsfinch says:

Sarah, I’m so sorry. We grew to love Hobey along with you, and he will most definitely be missed.

  • kategm says:

Oh no! I loved your cat stories too. I hope Hobie and Little Joe are in a cat heaven where they finally chase the Roombas and can eat all the yogurt and french fries they want.
I’m going to hug my sister’s cat extra hard when she wakes up me in about five hours by singing the song of her people at the top of her tiny cat lungs.
    Rest in peace, Hobey.

  • LisaD says:

I am so very sorry. :(

  • IS says:

I’m so terribly sorry. My deepest condolences.

  • Sheila says:

Aw shit, Sars, I’m so sorry. What a beautiful long life, but that doesn’t make it easier. Makes it harder, maybe, except — I don’t know, every age is the worst time to lose them.
My Dreamsicle kitty (in his own final days, goddamn it all to hell) is a plastic-licker too. Something carried on the ginger-fur gene? Makes me crazy, but I’m so aware of how much I’m about to miss it. My thoughts are with you.

  • profreader says:

A friend of mine recently said (and may have been quoting, I’m not sure): “My advice to the world is, if you want to be immortal, be loved by a writer.” I was so sorry to see this post — got choked up just as when we read about Little Joe. Like everyone else who is posting today, I had such vivid mental images of those two — the hilarious and awful and disgusting and never-would-trade moments of pet companionship. You’ve made them immortal.

  • JT says:

Awww, I’m sorry, Sars. I know how hard this is.

What a long and happy life Hobey led. I know that doesn’t make it easier though.

  • Sarah in Ottawa says:

What a brutal, heart-breaking couple of days for you, Sarah. I am so, so sorry.

  • avis says:

I am so sorry for your loss. I loved those kitties and your stories about them.

  • Coffeedrinker says:

Oh sadness. The Hobe. I think of him every damn time I see a Roomba – “now it’s eating the kibble???” Hahahaha. Big hugs to you Sars.

  • Maria says:

It occurs to me, all these hours after first seeing this on FB, that I took for granted that Hobey would be around forever. Because he’s always BEEN around. I can’t imagine how much it hurts to lose your boy.

I’m not a cat person by any stretch, but Hobey was a cool dude. And I really wish I could see what he and Joe are up to now. Hobey’s heaven = Joe bending to Hobe’s exasperated will. Joe’s heaven = purple monkey dishwasher startle poo.

Love and hugs to you. I’m gonna go read some Hobey archives.

  • Bubbles says:

    I’m so sorry.

  • Bev says:

So very sorry. I wish i could say something more helpful.
We all loved stories of Hobie/Hobey.

  • JenV says:

Oh Sars. I’m so damned sorry. We’ll all miss The Hobe. Not that it makes it any easier but you should take comfort in the fact that he had a great life, thanks to you. And also thanks to you, we’re all going to remember him. RIP, Hobey.

  • cait says:

So sorry for the loss of your fuzzy family member. May perpetual sunbeams shine upon him.

  • Sarahnova says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Sars, but thank you for giving the Hobe such a long, happy, and well-loved life.
