Little Joe, 199?-2013

Angels, prepare to receive among you my little friend. Please make him welcome with people food, especially Kix, because he likes to chase them, and lettuce, because I still don’t know why, but I know he deserves it. No fuzzy little butterpants ever took better care of a broken heart. Except for this one.

Little bear, I miss you terribly. Until we meet again, remember that I love you, and that shoelaces are toys, always.

Sarah

  • Leigh in CO says:

He was a great cat, providing amusement to so very many humans. What a life he led. My heart hurts; I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • Veronica B. says:

I am so sorry for your loss, Sars. Like another poster, I’m a very longtime stalker reader who remembers you bringing Little Joe home. The hysterical cat stories you used to post about him and The Hobe are some of my favorite “comfort” reading. (Not to mention almost got me in trouble for laughing out loud at work when you first posted them.)

  • Bridget says:

Oh, Sars. I am so sorry. He was a blessing on your life, and ours.

  • cayenne says:

Oh, Sars. I’ve always loved reading about visits to the vet, Roomba rumbles, and fights for household cat primacy, so when I saw your tweet, I immediately sniffled because I felt like I knew Little Joe. So sorry to hear this.

  • Felicia says:

Oh Geez…I hate this for you guys. I’m so sorry about your little dude.

  • Deanna says:

No, Joe! So sorry for your loss, and for the cat who gave us the immortal phrase “startle poo.” I loved his stories.

  • Tyliag says:

Oh my god! Not Little Joe! I’m so sorry Sars. Thanks to your stories, he didn’t just belong to you, he belonged to us all. You gave us that because he gave you such memorable stories. We’ll always have the startle-poop. Love you much Little Joe. RIP.

  • Angharad says:

Oh, no. I’m so sorry, Sars.

I’ve laughed myself into tears over so many of your Little Joe stories, and now I’m just in tears. Rest peacefully, little one.

  • Apostrophina says:

So sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed reading about him.

  • Chlott says:

I’m so sorry. And so is Benson, my cat, who grudgingly wonders why I force-cuddled him just now.

  • Lori says:

    Sweet dreams, Little Joe.

  • Sarah D. Bunting says:

…Weirdly, the Roomba finally went toes-up last week its own self (RIP, Alfred). Maybe he couldn’t continue without his nemesis?

Thank you all so much for remembering him so well.

  • Trip says:

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about this. My condolences.

  • SPM says:

I’m really sorry for your loss. I always loved reading about your cats back in the day.

  • Gina says:

Condolences, Sarah. I’ll miss tales of his antics, and I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • c8h10n4o2 says:

So, so sorry. It’s been a bad couple years for pets around here, so I really know what you’re going through.

  • grandefille says:

    Oh no.

Bless Joe’s furry little heart. And yours, Sars. And Hobey’s and Mabel’s. May happy memories help ease your loss and comfort you.

    “Meeeerrrt flerow. Rrrrrrr.”

I’m so, so sorry. I’m sure it’s no comfort at all, but your little guy was beloved of many. As you of course know. I’m so sorry.

  • Emily says:

O Little Joe. You will be so missed. I’m very sorry for your loss, Sarah, and know that he will be with you always. My oldest cat passed away last year and I still miss him every day. Please know we all send you hugs and kind thoughts and will always think of him when we see a Roomba.

  • Bronte says:

I’d been hoping for cat news, there”re my favourite posts, but not this sort of cat story.

We lost three cats in 18 months – we live on a nasty piece of road – and it was awful every time.

I’m very sorry for your loss.

  • RobinP says:

So sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you.

  • Laura says:

So sorry to see this. RIP Little Joe x

  • Lore says:

Very sorry to hear this sad news. Sending wishes of comfort to you and the rest of the cat members of the Bunting family.

  • Carol Elaine says:

I’m so sorry, Sars. I’ve always loved the Little Joe stories – I know he was a special kitty. He was lucky to have you as his human.

  • attica says:

Oh, you poor thing. I’m so sorry for your fuzzy-faced loss.

  • Jen M. says:

Deckheads, perhaps my all time favorite cat essay, ever.

  • Mary says:

Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss. He was an extraordinary (not) little dude, and you’re the best of pet moms!

  • Anneliese says:

Oh Sars, we will miss Little Joe’s antics, and how happy (and frustrated!) he’d make you. It’s so hard to lose our beloved furry companions. I’m so sorry for your loss, and you just know he’s so overwhelmed with people food and shoelaces he’s beside himself. Internets hugs and kitty purrs.

  • Oh, so sorry for your loss, Sars. He will be missed.

  • sarawr says:

Oh, Sars, I am so sorry.

  • Kristin says:

Little Joe, especially for your sake I hope Albert Brooks is right, and you are eating everything you want and staying “little”. You were very much loved and I think you knew that – what more could any of us want?

So sorry, Sars. Your gift of storytelling means you are not alone in your grief – we are all with you in spirit.

  • Ang says:

I’m so sorry. I hope that your memories will comfort you. Reading about Little Joe’s antics always made me laugh—how special that he touched so many of us! Loving a cat is a most special thing, and I’m glad you were able to give him a good life.

  • JenV says:

Oh, Sars. I am so very sorry for your loss. I loved reading about Little Joe’s shenanigans.

I had to say goodbye to my own little bear, Boo, two days after Thanksgiving. He was 12 and I’d had him since he was just a wee kitten. I was a total wreck. Losing little buddies is literally the worst thing.

  • Allie says:

A life (hilariously) well-lived, a legacy of laughter. It’s the best any of us can hope for really. I’m sorry for your loss Sarah.

  • Oh, Sarah, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve been through quite a few pet deaths over the years, and it seems like they never get any easier. Hugs to you. I’m glad Little Joe had so much love.

  • Shani says:

    Deepest sympathies, Sarah.

  • flora_poste says:

So sorry for your loss, Sars. I’ve loved reading about the cat escapades, and he was lucky to have you as his person.

  • Jen S 1.0 says:

    Oh Sars, I’m so sorry.

It’s not every cat that has so much personality a nation of strangers would follow, remember, and love him, if only from the electronic ether.

Big hugs to everyone in the Tomato house today.

  • Emily says:

Sending hugs and sympathy your way…

  • Kathryn says:

I’m so sorry to hear of Little Joe’s passing. He was a good and well-loved kitty.

  • Molly says:

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. I’ve been reading about Little Joe for so many years, TN won’t be quite the same without him around.

  • Laura says:

So sorry for the loss of your sweet companion.

  • Megan says:

Oh no. We love them so much.

I am sorry to hear of your loss.

  • Angie says:

Oh, Sars. I’m so sorry. If there is any kind of life after this, our pets will be the first ones waiting to see us when we get there. I’m remembering your amazing stories of him, eating post-it glue and lotion and shower mildew and McDonalds fries (“Pray the dear Lord to spare your life” is still a phrase that comes to mind often!) and startle poo-ing from the Roomba. He made our lives richer, too. Happy Kix hunting in Heaven, Little Joe!

  • Trasherati says:

He’ll be sorely missed, Sars. Condolences to you, and thank you for sharing him with us all these years.

  • Donna says:

I am so sorry for your loss.

  • Katharine says:

I’m so sorry, Sars. Little Joe made me laugh so much, so many times. Go well, little cat.

  • RC says:

Nooooo :(:(:( I’m so sorry. Your stories of the feline Buntings are always my favorites. Except this one. I will hug my kitties hard tonight in Joe’s memory (well, the ones who tolerate hugs. The other one I will try to pet her on the head before she bolts, in his memory).

  • Faith says:

    Nooooooooooo!

Oh, I’m so sorry Sars. :(

  • Meri says:

I’m sorry for your loss. ‘Advanced Conversational Feline’ is what I turn to when I need to cheer myself up, and I’ve borrowed many of your threats for my two furbeasts over the years.
