Little Joe, 199?-2013

Angels, prepare to receive among you my little friend. Please make him welcome with people food, especially Kix, because he likes to chase them, and lettuce, because I still don’t know why, but I know he deserves it. No fuzzy little butterpants ever took better care of a broken heart. Except for this one.

Little bear, I miss you terribly. Until we meet again, remember that I love you, and that shoelaces are toys, always.

Sarah

  • Lily P. says:

Oh Little Joe. This is sad news indeed. Sars, count me as another longtime reader (since 1999) who will miss your huggable friend. Extra internet chin scritches from me to Hobey.

  • kategm says:

kategm’s reaction during random web browsing:
“Oh my God, no! Not Little Joe!”

I am so sorry for your loss, Sars. I loved reading about Joe and Hobie’s shenanigans.
Hair elastics are also toys, as my sister’s cat will insist.

  • kategm says:

Forgot to add that I was just thinking about Little Joe the other day, for some reason– specifically, when you admitted to the vet that he sometimes stole french fries from you.

  • Cat_slave says:

Oh, I’m so sorry for your loss. It never gets easier to lose a beloved furball. Thank you, Sars and Little Joe, for all the stories that made us laugh. And also this, that made me cry.

  • Helen says:

Oh no!! So sorry for your loss. The Little Joe sagas have always been some of my favorites. Rest in Peace, big fella.

  • Andrea says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Sars. Little Joe and Hobey have always been two of my favorite internet cats, and Joe will be terribly missed. I need to try to make my cat let me hug her now.

  • perhaps says:

So, so sorry Sars, lots of virtual hugs to you, Hobe and Mabel–loved reading about the catnanigans this last decade. I lost my only kitty years ago and still miss him, the one picture up is very much like the one you have posted–round furry hat with a face in cat bed.

  • JenK says:

Oh, Sars, I’m so sorry to hear that. I started following TN ages ago when a friend sent me a link to one of the posts about Hobey and Little Joe. He reminded me so much of one of my boys, Socrates (that’s SOH-crayts, a la Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure)–he’s a big boy with a big heart but not much going on upstairs. And now I have to stop crying before the kids ask what’s up. Sending hugs and love to you and your other furry companions.

  • coleBlue says:

I know there’s nothing I can say that will actually make it better (anyone ever discovers those magical words of wisdom, let me know). And probably nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said (and better) by some other commenter, but I’ll throw my useless words on top of the pile anyway.

You are going to be sad. And that is okay. You should be sad. Whether that means you spend some time sobbing uncontrollably, or rage against the unfairness of world for taking your boy away from you, or go through old photos and memories until you just can’t stand it anymore because you don’t want stupid pictures you want the real thing. Maybe you do all those things. Maybe you do none of them. But it’s gonna hurt now, and it’s gonna hurt later. Even years down the line, you’ll read about somebody else’s cat dying and you’ll remember how much you miss your past beloveds, and try to write something comforting and wind up crying yourself. But that’s okay, too. Because you loved that cat, and he damn well knew it, and all you can do is keep on loving him.

  • Amanda says:

Aw, Sars, I’m sorry. Big hugs to you and the Hobe and Mabel.

  • Kate says:

    I’m so sorry.

  • Barb says:

    I’m so very sorry.

  • Honey Wheeler says:

De-lurking to add my condolences. Sars I am so sorry to hear this. I have loved reading your stories of Little Joe’s escapades.

  • Katie Levin says:

Oh, I am so sorry. He was such a beloved fellow.

  • JK says:

I am so, so very sorry for your loss. He was lucky to have been loved by you.

  • Stef says:

Oh, Sars. I am so sorry. Hopefully my Sadie will be there to hang with him.

  • Yet Another Jen S says:

I am so, so sorry for your loss.

  • erin says:

I’m so sorry to hear about Little Joe – I loved any and all stories about him. I’ll keep him in my thoughts.

  • saevae says:

I’ve been reading since the early days, when your photo essay about office supplies involved a large orange cat on a teetering box tower. I used to laugh myself sick about Little Joe’s crush on the vet tech and his distressingly bad breath…which I always chalked up to eating post-it notes. (must be that glue.) Godspeed, Little Joe, you made so many people happy and hug their kitties just a little tighter.

  • Lori says:

Aw, sweet Little Joe. Sniff. (((Hugs)))

  • Kelsey says:

Oh Sarah, I am sorry. I am another long-time reader crying actual tears over the loss of your little buddy.

  • Jas says:

I’m so sorry to hear of Little Joe’s passing. I’ve been reading your site for a long time. I remember when Joe came on the scene. It doesn’t seem right that we’re already reading of his exit.

  • Wendy says:

So sorry for your loss. Little Joe sounded like a wonderful cat, the the Roomba story still makes me laugh.

  • Laura K says:

I’m so sorry, Sarah. I’ll think of him every time anyone mentions a Roomba.

  • ysabet says:

Oh! I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my Sammy two years ago. He was a tabby too, so maybe he’s on the welcoming committee. RIP, boys.

  • Emma says:

That instinct to hug your pal because you’re crying and they always make you feel better, but when you’re crying in the first place because you can’t…so sorry you’re going through it. I’m sure we’re all thinking of you.

  • Lacinda says:

Oh, Sars. I’m so sorry. I just went through this last month and it was the hardest thing. Take care of yourself and grieve as long as you need to.

  • Jan says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Little Joe looks so content in the picture.
I wish you strength in this difficult time.

  • Kim says:

Oh, Sarah, I’m so sorry to hear this. Little Joe was a veritable head of state in the Nation, and rather Taft-esque…though I’m sure I don’t need to tell you either of those things. You’re in my thoughts. Sweet dreams, dear little tubbo cat.

  • Erin McJ says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Sars.

  • Maryse42 says:

I’m so sorry for your loss, Sarah. I cried like a baby over losing the cat that nursed me through a broken heart many, many years ago, and I still miss that wee beastie. Some cats never leave us, y’know? Thank you so much for sharing him with us. He’ll never leave the Nation, now, thanks to your eloquence and generosity in telling us his stories.

  • SorchaRei says:

Very sorry for your loss. I hope he left easily and I know he left a lot of good memories.

  • Tina says:

I’m so sorry for your loss.
I’ll be sure to give my kitty some lettuce tonight in his honor. I don’t know why, either.

  • Kate Smith says:

So sorry for your loss, Sars. There’s nothing as wonderful as a pet.

  • Morgi says:

So sorry for your loss–the Nation (and Fat City) will miss him very much. Gonna hug my own spherical kitty when I get home.

  • Hollie says:

Oh, Sarah, I’m so sorry. Little Joe’s antics made me laugh so hard so many times over the years. I can only imagine how much you enjoyed his company and how much he’ll be missed. Will be thinking of you….
