The Vine: Ask The Readers Book-a-thon #8

Sars —

I’m hoping the readers can help me out with my search for a beloved childhood read.   It was a YA novel about a teenage girl in post-Revolutionary America (I think Jefferson was president during the novel), living in upstate New York (Hudson River Valley?).   I think her friend/eventual love interest was at least part Native American, and faced some community prejudice.

There were ghosts in the book — maybe the ghosts were Dutch, maybe the girl was of English descent, but there was definitely some Dutch/English tension going on.   I think the girl/her father were fairly patriotic for the new Republic.

That’s all I remember.   I am pretty sure the book was new when I read it in junior high (around 1990), the title had something to do with the aforementioned ghosts, and maybe the cover was a dark blue or gray or black with figures on it?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Betsy

Original question-asker here. I actually found it in between writing in and this getting published–it’s The Ghosts of Stony Clove, by Eileen Charbonneau.

  • Hi Betsy! Glad to see your memory is so good! The Ghosts of Stony Clove is still in print, I’m happy to say! And you may be able to find its sequels, In the Time of the Wolves and Honor to the Hills at my favorite independent bookseller, merrittbooks.com!
    Best–
    Eileen Charbonneau

I did indeed buy and read and enjoy the sequels, once I’d tracked down the original.
